Lucy Khanyan Quintet is an avant-garde folk project founded and led by pianist and composer Lucy Khanyan in 2017. This all-female ensemble is a rare and powerful voice in the Armenian music scene, uniting five exceptional female musicians who bring their distinct artistry to a blend of Armenian folk, avant-garde composition, jazz, and world music. What makes the Lucy Khanyan Quintet especially remarkable is not only its groundbreaking original repertoire but also its role as the only all-female orchestra of its kind in Armenia. The ensemble features a unique instrumentation —piano, blul (an ancient Armenian wind instrument), drums, bass, and kanon —
and has released two albums titled “Ābsentia” and “Komitas through the eyes
of the Lucy Khanian Quartet” in 2020.
Lucy Khanyan, leader of the quintet, is a pianist and composer who incorporates
a multi instrumental approach. She has received her Elemental music education
in Armenia, but is mainly self-taught; Lucy often explores new and unconventional approaches to creating music that challenge traditional ideas about what folk music can be. Besides her own projects, Lucy Khanyan has been collaborating with other artists performing and recording. She continues her creative endeavor
and has released many EPs over the years.
With performances across Armenia and beyond, and albums available on all major digital platforms, the quintet continues to carve a singular path in contemporary music, redefining Armenian folk through a fearless and visionary lens.
Members:
Anna Hovhannisyan: blul
